Scottsdale-based Medicis on Tuesday announced that its Restylane product has gained national recognition.

Restylane, an injection for the correction of facial wrinkles and folds, was named one of the winners of Allure's 2004 Best of Beauty Breakthrough Award.

Allure magazine established the Breakthrough Award in 2000 to acknowledge products which set new standards for innovation.

Restylane was the first hyaluronic acid-based filler to receive approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has been used in more than 1.5 million procedures worldwide since 1996.

Breakthrough winners are selected by the editors of Allure. A complete list of award recipients appears in the October issue, which is currently available on newsstands.

Medicis Aesthetics Inc., the company that is marketing and selling Restylane in the United States, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Medicis Pharmaceutical Corp. (NYSE: MRX), an independent specialty pharmaceutical company, focused primarily on the treatment of aesthetic, dermatological and podiatric conditions.
